A police cordon was seen in place on Chirton Green, and a car was recovered. The white Audi was parked in a back lane on the street and appeared to have a smashed window on the driver's side.
Officers were at the scene at approximately 7am. Northumbria Police have now confirmed that an investigation has been launched, following a report that a man in his 30s was assaulted while in his stationary car.

Officers have appealed to the public for help, urging anyone with information to come forward.

'I was scared for our lives' - Mum tells of terror as intruder hid in her back yard
A mum has told of her terror as an intruder smashed his way into her back yard yesterday morning moments after the suspected knife attack.
The woman was at home with her 12-year-old son in the Chirton area when she said she heard a banging noise coming from the back of her property. And when she looked out the window she said she realised someone was kicking their gate in.
The mum, who did not want to be named, shouted to her son to get to the front of the house and he phoned police while they both hid from view until the unknown intruder fled. Soon after a police officer came to the woman's door and told her they were hunting an attacker after a man was stabbed as he sat in his car on a back lane nearby.
The mum said: "I was frantic and scared for our lives as I didn't know what was going to happen next, my mind assumed his next move would be to break into the house. And it was even worse about hearing of the knife attack."

The two men are believed to be known to each other
Northumbria Police have also confirmed that the two men involved in yesterday's incident are believed to have known each other.
A spokesperson said: "Those involved are believed to be known to each other and there is believed to be no wider risk to the public."

The victim of yesterday's suspected knife attack has since been discharged from hospital, police have confirmed.
The man, in his 30s, suffered injuries "consistent with being caused by a bladed article" after another man entered his stationary car on Chirton Green, officers said.

- Shortly before 7am, Northumbria Police received a report that a man in his 30s had been assaulted in the area.
- It was reported that the victim was in his stationary vehicle when another man entered through the rear passenger door.
- The victim was then reportedly assaulted, before the offender got out and began to cause damage to the vehicle.
- The offender then fled the scene.
- Investigators were on the scene at Chirton Grange from around 7am this morning, with a police cordon put in place to seal off a back lane on Chirton Grange.
- A white Audi was seen with a smashed window behind the cordon. This car was removed by a tow truck shortly after police arrived.

The local resident sent a photo of the gate that she said was "smashed down" by a man she believed to be the offender this morning, as he "tried to hide" in her yard following the reported assault.
The image shows the gate swinging open, with parts of wood broken off and lying in the yard.

A resident local to the Chirton Green area has told the Chronicle that she and her child were left "terrified" when a man she believed to be the offender tried to break down her back gate and "hide" in her yard this morning.
The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said: "At 6.50am this morning the man they are looking for smashed down my back gate and tried to hide in our yard, myself and child were absolutely terrified."
Police have confirmed that an investigation is now underway to find the man who reportedly assaulted another man in his 30s in his car and caused damage to the vehicle on Chirton Green this morning.

Another resident, who did not want to be identified, said police had knocked on her door this morning to see if she had heard anything.
She said: "I just saw the Audi in the back lane. It was a bit of a shock, obviously they asked if I had heard anything, but I was asleep."

'I have never seen a copper here', says 30-year resident
Ken continued: "I have lived here 30 year and I have never seen a copper here.
"There was about six or seven cop cars there this morning. At first I just thought the car had been pinched."

Local residents tell of waking up to police outside their home
People living near the scene have today told the Chronicle how they awoke to find police outside their home.
Ken Herron said friends had discovered the incident had happened after seeing pictures on Facebook and started getting in touch to ask if he was ok.
The 72-year-old said: "At about 6.30am I heard what sounded like a door slamming. When I came out for a look the police woman said someone had been hurt."
He added: "I have seen on Facebook there’s been there’s been a stabbing. All my mates had been asking us if I was ok and they know I live here."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson continued: "Emergency services attended and the victim was found to have suffered injuries consistent with being caused by a bladed article.
"He was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening where he remains in a stable condition."
