Who can help me if my account is hacked? ›

File an identity theft report with the FTC on IdentityTheft.gov. File a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). File a police report when you discover that you've been hacked, especially in cases of identity theft.

FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): If the hack involves online fraud, scams, or other cybercrimes, file a complaint with the IC3 at www.ic3.gov. This federal agency gathers and analyzes data on cybercrime and works with law enforcement agencies nationwide to combat these threats.

If hackers get into your device or accounts, they could access your money and personal information and you could become a victim of identity theft or identity fraud. Identity theft is when your personal details are stolen and identity fraud is when those details are used to commit fraud.

Log in using the Facebook app and select “Forgot password”. Choose the prompts indicating that you can't access the account's current phone number and email address. After following these prompts, you should receive a form to fill out, requesting a change to your account's primary address.

Step 1: Change your passwords

On accounts or devices that contain sensitive information, make sure your password is strong, unique—and not easily guessable.

Can the police do anything about a hacked account? ›

While there may not be much that the police can do to find the person who hacked into your account, having a record of the theft will be helpful as you work with your bank to get your money back. You should also consider reporting the compromise to the Federal Trade Commission.

To remove a hacker from your phone, you need to update software and apps, carefully review permissions and account settings, and delete all suspicious apps, files, and downloads.
